Dear Sons

November 5, 2021 - In Honor of Nicholas' Last Football Game/Season

Dear Sons:

In the face of the loss of a game that means so much to you, we know the pain and disappointment you are feeling; we’ve been there before. And we know it won’t be your last pain or disappointment. But we need to take a moment to simply remind you of all that you have gained from this experience that shines brighter than a state championship.

We are not only your parents, but we are also your greatest fans. We have organized so many elements behind the scenes over several years – popsicles and juices boxes in your very early years to team meals in your final years. We have organized rides when you couldn’t drive and have personally paid so you could be chartered and fed on away games. We were there in your early year scrapes and bumps and even closer when you had ACL repair surgery and concussion therapy.

So many of us never attended or graduated from Shanley but we knew early on how important Catholic education would be for you… and how it would trickle down on and eventually cascade over your sports and extracurriculars. You came together with your teammates early on with the singular goal of having a greater score than your opponent. But over time the goal subtly grew to have a greater sense of “family” with your teammates. You not only lived that principle, but you modeled it so profoundly for all parents. And because of this, one of your greatest accomplishments as a team is that you helped create a community of parents that have become confidantes and friends. That task shines in a golden array.

In the silent confines of our bedroom, we prayed you would not be seriously injured and the Lord would watch over you while we secretly hoped you would extend yourself to make that game-winning play. And if you were injured, please know that we hurt collectively.

At the end of the day and as the sun sets on this very moment of your life, we truly believe there will be another tomorrow; one full of greater challenges, hopes and dreams. And we will be there on the sidelines of Life to cheer you on. But know that you will need to be the one that will decide the play and decide your effort. Win or lose, we are behind you, around you, underneath you and ahead of you 100%... and in that is 100% success.
